English Mobile Project

  • Background

    • Content Area: This lesson applies to multiple areas including English Language Arts/ Social Studies/ Science -- for the purpose of this assignment, ELA will be the content area
    • Title: Strengthening Text-based Communication Skills
    • Grade Level or Target Group: 9-12 grades

  • Pre Planning

    • Big Idea(s):
      • Information needs to be selected, evaluated, and integrated into discussions of various formats.
      • Multiple sources of information help support or balance ideas and opinions
    • Essential Questions:
      • Why is important to formulate text-based discussions?
      • What value do multiple sources have on a given topic?
      • How do conversations in small and large groups help develop and broaden ideas and understanding?
      • What are tools that can help facilitate discussions?
    • Objectives:
The following are standards in the Speaking Listening strand of the Common Core Standards. The items below are directly from corestandards.org (each standard label is a link)

Comprehension and Collaboration:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1
Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1.A
Come to discussions prepared, having read and researched material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that relate the current discussion to broader themes or larger ideas; actively incorporate others into the discussion; and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1.D
Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, summarize points of agreement and disagreement, and, when warranted, qualify or justify their own views and understanding and make new connections in light of the evidence and reasoning presented.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.2
Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source.

Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.5
Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence and to add interest.

Note: Some of the following resources and tools are not found in an app store, but are websites.  Because they are useful, they should not be ignored.  Here is a video on creating a webclip to add an icon to the home screen.

    Lesson Opening

      • Lesson Opening (The Hook): Students begin by investigating sources that the teacher directs them to (see below), or a more general search.

      Lesson Body

        • Students are then to read and annotate for deeper comprehension.  This activity of reading and responding to the reading by annotating, highlighting, commenting will prepare them for a discussion and/or presentation in which students can provide text-based opinions and comments.

        • Explanation: This resource will help students through the research process, particularly as students select, evaluate, and use information.

        • Check for Understanding: With this tool, the teacher can assess each student's level of ability to select main ideas, details, and other important phrases and sentences in a text.  This mirrors what the students are doing on their own and is useful because it is a social activity.

        • Extended Practice: These tools allow the student to continue to extract information that will be used later.

        Closing

          • Lesson Closing: This app allows students to create a visual presentation that can be  supported by textual evidence.

            • Materials:  devices, accounts created, apps loaded onto the devices
